 1.1.8 Basic Questions and Negatives

1. What are Questions and Negatives?

In English, we need to know how to:

  • Ask questions (get information)

  • Make negative sentences (say that something is not true)

This helps students communicate in everyday situations.


2. Yes / No Questions

Yes/No questions are questions that can be answered with Yes or No.

Structure with verb to be:

  • Verb to be + subject + complement?

Examples:

  • Are you happy? → Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.

  • Is he your brother? → Yes, he is. / No, he isn’t.


3. Wh- Questions

Wh- questions start with question words:
What, Where, Who, When, Why, How

Structure with verb to be:

  • Question word + verb to be + subject + complement?

Examples:

  • What is this? → It is a pen.

  • Where is she? → She is at school.

  • Who is he? → He is my friend.


4. Making Negative Sentences

Negatives show that something is not true.

Structure with verb to be:

  • Subject + verb to be + not + complement

Examples:

  • I am not tired.

  • She is not at home.

  • They are not students.

(Contractions are optional at this level:

  • is not → isn’t

  • are not → aren’t)


5. Practice Activities

  • Forming Yes/No questions and answering them

  • Forming Wh- questions and answering them

  • Turning affirmative sentences into negatives

  • Speaking practice with classmates


6. Common Errors (Basic)

  • You is happy?

  • Are you happy?

  • She not at school.

  • She is not at school.
