What is the verb to be?

The verb to be is a basic and very important verb in English.
It is used to talk about:

  • Identity

  • Age

  • Occupation

  • Feelings

  • Location

Examples:

  • I am a student.

  • She is happy.


Forms of the Verb To Be (Present Tense)

Affirmative Sentences

Structure:
Subject + verb to be + complement

Examples:

  • I am tired.

  • You are my friend.

  • He is a teacher.


Negative Sentences

Structure:

Examples:

  • I am not tired.

  • She is not at home.

  • They are not students.

(Contractions – optional at this level):

  • is not → isn’t

  • are not → aren’t


Yes / No Questions

Structure:
Verb to be + subject + complement?

Examples:

  • Am I late?

  • Are you ready?

  • Is she your sister?


Short Answers

  • Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.

  • Yes, he is. / No, he isn’t.


Using To Be in Simple Contexts

  • Identity: I am Ana.

  • Age: I am 25 years old.
